What was recorded

A strong radio signal appeared in the Ohio State telescope’s observations. Jerry Ehman marked the printout with “Wow!” The sequence 6EQUJ5 encodes changing signal intensity; it is not a decoded message.

Why it remains open

The cited SETI account reports that the signal was not seen again. A single nonrepeating observation limits follow-up. An extraterrestrial source, a natural source and interference should not be treated as equally verified conclusions.
