The signal of interest
Breakthrough Listen observations contained a narrowband signal with some characteristics expected of a possible technosignature. The candidate was therefore investigated rather than immediately declared extraterrestrial.
What the analysis found
Sheikh and colleagues identified electronically drifting intermodulation from local interferers and related signals at frequencies associated with common clock oscillators. Their conclusion refutes an extraterrestrial interpretation of this candidate within the scope of their analysis, not the wider search for intelligence.
